Europe sees US debt crisis as dire as its own

16 hrs.

Now it?s Europe?s turn to worry about U.S. economy.

American officials have been wringing their hands for the past two years about the heavy burden of government debt piling up in Europe. On Tuesday, Europe?s Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development warned that the U.S. "fiscal cliff" threatens prospects for the eurozone?s economic recovery.

?We?re talking here about the medium and long-term viability of the United States economy,? OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria told CNBC. ?Not only to avoid the fiscal cliff but then get to a moment where (U.S.) debt stops rising and the debt to GDP starts coming down to an area where we call all breathe more comfortably.?

In its latest Economic Outlook, the influential Paris-based think tank said that?with the eurozone?s economy already headed in reverse, the United States faces the same fate if lawmakers fail to agree a deal to avoid a combination of tax hikes and budget cuts that will otherwise take effect next year.

?The US ?fiscal cliff,' if it materializes, could tip an already weak economy into recession, while failure to solve the euro-area crisis could lead to a major financial shock and global downturn,? Gurria told reporters in Paris.

Even if a deal is reached, the OECD joined other forecasters calling for a continued global economic slowdown in 2013. For the U.S., that means expansion of just 2.0 percent, versus the OECD's 2.6 percent forecast in May.

The eurozone economy is expected to shrink by 0.4 percent this year and another 0.1 percent next year, before recovering at a weak 1.3 percent growth rate in 2014, the forecasters said.

Negotiations in Washington continued this week on a broad range of alternatives to the current budget law, which would impose roughly half a billion dollars in government spending cuts and tax increases starting Jan. 1. Uncertainty over the outcome has depressed hiring and investment by businesses, some economists say.

On Monday, White House economists estimated that the budget measure, unless altered or postponed, would carve some $200 billion out of consumer spending, which accounts for about two thirds of the U.S. economy. Together with deep cuts in government spending, the package would wipe out the current weaker recovery and shrink the U.S. economy by about 0.5 percent in 2013, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

Congress and the White House have been deadlocked on solutions since the law was enacted after a bitter battle in July 2011 over increasing the government?s legal borrowing authority. Though President Barack?Obama and Republican leaders have made conciliatory comments since the November election, there has been little in the way of concessions needed to reach a compromise.

Most observers believe that the worst of the tax hikes will be avoided ? if only because they would be so politically unpopular. The so-called Alternative Minimum Tax, for example, would ensnare some 28 million households with new taxes next year unless Congress once again agrees to a ?patch.?

But broad compromise on reforming the thicket of deductions, exemptions and other breaks in the tax code, along with restructuring the massive Medicare and Social Security entitlement programs, will be much harder to pull off.

?I think it is a romantic hope that to believe that these politicians can agree to a grand bargain that will fundamentally fix our budget deficit issue,? said Richard Hoey, chief economist at BNY Mellon. ? I think that is totally unrealistic.?

That kind of sweeping fundamental reform has eluded European governments for years.

On Monday, facing the latest precipice in their two-year saga trying to head off a Greek debt default, European leaders hammered out yet another bailout package that calls on the Greek government to pare down its debt in the coming decade.

But while the latest plan appeared to buy more time, the threat of the longer-term crisis remains.

?Athens? cash reserves must be down to vapors,? said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. ?Any interruption in implementation of this scheme could cause an ugly default, with little or no warning.?

The details of the latest ?solution? are murky, and the plan still faces opposition from both individual eurozone governments and potential legal challenges.

Terms of a proposed buyback of Greek debt that would leave some bond holders with losses haven?t been worked out. And the 44 billion euro ($53 billion) bailout payments over the next two months will be made in stages ? with each new payment conditioned on Athens meeting milestones called for by its European benefactors.?

The longer term solution to Europe's debt crisis is even murkier - a possible portent of what U.S. lawmakers face if they can't work out a broad tax and spending compromise soon.?

Is There a Short List of Star Lord Candidates for ?Guardians of the Galaxy??

11-28-12 ? Comics, Film Posted by Adam A. Donaldson 3 Views

Obviously the answer is yes.

With a release date of August 1, 2013 breathing down their necks, it seems that Marvel Studios is putting their casting list together for Guardians of the Galaxy. Today, Deadline published a short(ish) list of candidates that the studio is looking at for the James Gunn adaptation of the Marvel space-superhero team.

So who?s on the list? How about Joel Edgerton (Uncle Owen in the Star Wars prequels), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), and Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn). They?ve all been confirmed by Deadline as testing for the part.

However, there are three other candidates who have expressed interest in one way, shape or form. One is Garrett Hedlund, star of TRON Legacy who didn?t exactly leave fans wanting more from his performance in that movie. Two is James Marsden, who maybe going after Chris Evans? record for most number of comic book characters played considering he?s most well-known for playing Cyclops in X-Men 1-3 and Richard in Superman Returns. And third is Sullivan Stapleton, who?s well-known for a lot of Australian TV.

No mention of Nathan Fillion, who?s worked with Gunn in the past, and is a top fan pick for, well, anything. But Fillion?s already said he?s too busy with his series Castle to take part.

How about you Bastards? Who?s your pick for Star Lord: one of the people named above or someone off the mark?

Three accused of plotting to join al-Qaida indicted in California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Three men accused of plotting to join up with al Qaeda and Taliban militants for training in Afghanistan were indicted on Wednesday in California in a move that could allow prosecutors to move to trial more quickly.

But the four-page indictment, returned by a grand jury in Riverside, offered few details beyond those contained in a criminal complaint filed earlier this month against the men, all U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The indictment charged Ralph Kenneth Deleon, 23, Miguel Alejandro Vidriales Santana, 21, and Arifeen David Gojali, 21, with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, the same charge contained in the complaint.

The filing of the indictment allows federal prosecutors to skip a preliminary hearing in which they would lay out their case and a judge would determine if there was enough evidence to merit a trial. The men each face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The three men had lived in Southern California's Inland Empire, east of Los Angeles, before their arrest on November 16, two days before they had planned to fly to Turkey via Mexico before heading on to Afghanistan, the FBI said at the time.

The suspected ringleader, Sohiel Omar Kabir, 34, is accused of recruiting the three men, two of whom converted to Islam under his influence. Kabir was apprehended this month in Afghanistan, but was not listed in Wednesday's indictment.

Kabir, who was charged in the previously filed criminal complaint, is still being held in Afghanistan, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI. She declined to comment further on the case.

Deleon and Santana, in conversations relayed or recorded by an unidentified paid FBI informant, spoke about traveling to Afghanistan to join Kabir and engage in "violent jihad," according to the criminal complaint. It said they described potential targets for attacks, including U.S. military bases.

Together with Gojali, they also visited a Los Angeles firing range and a paint-ball facility for shooting practice to prepare for further militant training overseas, the FBI has said.

Milwaukee flight delayed after passenger finds shotgun shell

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A Delta flight from Milwaukee to Detroit was delayed on Wednesday after a passenger found a live shotgun shell by his seat and everyone on board had to pass through a security check a second time, a sheriff's official said.

The passenger found the shell at 6:47 a.m. local time in the seat-back pocket in front of him, said Fran McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred at Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport.

A sheriff's canine unit swept the plane and found no other shell casings, McLaughlin said.

The Transportation Security Administration rescreened all the passengers aboard the flight. After a one-hour delay, the plane took off for its original destination of Detroit, she said.

Representatives from Delta and the TSA could not be reached for comment.

The man who found the shell was interviewed by investigators, who found nothing suspicious about him, McLaughlin said. It remained unclear how the shell ended up on the flight.

Adobe enables citizen services in 18,000 villages across India's Gujarat

By eGov Innovation Editors | Nov 28, 2012

Over 18,000 Gram Panchayats or villages across India's Gujarat have installed Adobe Acrobat for the electronic issue of vital citizen certificates and other official documents under the E-Gram project.

Collaboration between Adobe and the Panchayat Rural Housing and Rural Development Department, the project aims to deliver transformational solutions to its citizens through Common Service Centers (CSCs). It offers a range of services to villages including the electronic issue of certificates of birth, death, income, caste, domicile, property, residence proof, agriculture, tax collection, marriage, family information and land ownership.

At the grassroots level, the process has removed the waiting period for various certificates, documents and application forms to be issued from a few days or weeks to just a matter of few minutes.

It has also proved to be effective in the quick resolution of grievances that previously took a long time to resolve, by providing immediate access to necessary documents and information. In the future, this initiative will be expanded to also provide commercial services to the state?s rural communities.
?
Adobe provided training (live sessions and video-on-demand) for most of the Village Computer Entrepreneurs to transition from the old, paper-based system to the digital era ushered in by the project.

The government said through the project, it hopes bridge the digital divide between urban and rural Gujarat by providing citizens access to digital information for all government documentation.

?We wanted to take governance to every level across the state. It was our aim through the E-Gram initiative to provide all the basic amenities that are available in big cities to villages across the state so that citizens do not feel the need to migrate to urban centers. Before, citizens had to travel to the district Taluka for these requirements. Today, citizens across these 18,000 villages can access these services at their gram panchayat. Life has become much simpler for them," said A. K. Rakesh, development commissioner, Government of Gujarat.

Satish Patel, a VCE from Sardhav village, said it would normally take three days to process a document but today, people can immediately process the document. This saves both time and money for us as citizens.
