Worthington Woman Stands Up To Cancer

By: Cabot Rea | NBC4i.com , NBC4

Friday night, NBC4 was among the television stations that aired the star-studded telethon Stand Up to Cancer.

Stand Up to Cancer has raised more than $180 million for cancer research and awareness since it was established in 2008.

Locally, the Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio offers 80 programs to improve the physical, mental and emotional outlook of cancer patients and their families.

Dennis Fuhr has been teaching the meditative practice of Zhineng Qigong for 15 years.

He says his classes promote wellness and recovery for those who are battling cancer.

Karen Young of Worthington takes part in the Zhineng Qigong classes every week.

Young was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Spring 2009.

She says a family conflict at a holiday gathering forced her to face the reality of her illness and she sought support at the Cancer Support Community of Central Ohio.

Besides the Zhineng Qigong classes, Young also participated in healthy cooking classes and support groups.

"These people understand the emotional trauma, stress, distress and how to get out of it," said Young.

She also says finding others in the "C-Club," as she calls it, has helped her stand up to cancer and look optimistically to the future.

Says Young, "I have non-Hodgkin's. I'll always have it and I have to keep it in check. And having this peacefulness helps my physical being stay healthy."
