Reactive arthritis is an autoimmune disorder caused by an infection. The patient has joint and eye inflammation, mucocutaneous and psoriasis lesion and enthesitis. Male patients may have urethritis while women may have cervicitis. In most cases, the condition is acute and resolves by itself within one year.
Some patients may have recurrent infection and the condition becomes chronic. The patient has disabling arthritis and impaired vision. The patient may also have kidney and heart problems. Most patients of reactive arthritis are adults who are above forty years. An early diagnosis helps in preventing arthtitic complications. Some causes of reactive arthritis are as follows.
Causes Of Reactive Arthritis
The Immune System
The cause of reactive arthritis is not known. However, it is believed that the condition may be due to an immune system disorder. The immune system provides protection to the body from disease and infection. When virus or bacteria enter the body, the immune system helps in fighting the infection by the production of antibodies.
Chemicals are released by the antibodies. Immediately, there is swelling and fluid formation in the tissues at the place of infection. This causes inflammation. Due to inflammation, the infection cannot spread easily and the number of WBC or white blood cells increases. These WBCs eliminate the virus or bacteria that cause the infection.
When the immune system fights the infecting microorganisms, there is formation of debris of dead germs. When the debris is deposited in the joints, it causes joint inflammation. If a patient has reactive arthritis, there is malfunctioning of the immune system. The body has an infection despite the end of the previous infection.
The cause of the condition is the over stimulation of autoimmune response. The symptoms of reactive arthritis appear in 2-4 weeks of the infection. Studies have shown that reactive arthritis also occurs due to deposition of the bacterial antigens in the joints. Usually, the patient is not aware of the infection as it has mild symptoms and many patients do not have any symptoms.

Sexual and Digestive Infections
Patients who have reactive arthritis are likely to suffer from infections that are sexually transmitted such as Chlamydia as well as gonorrhea. When the patient has a sexual infection, the patient has burning sensation in the urine and watery discharge from the private organs. The patient can also have gastrointestinal infections that affect the stomach as well as the digestive system.

Campylobacter as well as salmonella bacteria cause gastrointestinal infection due to food poisoning. The patient gets digestive infection after coming in contact with food that is not prepared properly like the storage of meat at incorrect temperature.
Viral and Bacterial Infections
In some cases, reactive arthritis occurs due to a viral infection. Some viruses that cause reactive arthritis are herpes, chickenpox, hepatitis, Epstein Barr virus and HIV. Due to viral infection, the patient has sore throat, rashes and cough. Another cause of reactive arthritis is bowel bacteria that lead to infectious dysentery. Reactive arthritis can be due to BCG bladder infusions for bladder cancer treatment.
Genetic Causes
Research has revealed that reactive arthritis may occur due to the HLA-B27 gene. The gene is present in majority of patients. Such patients suffer from severe symptoms of the disease and have a high risk that the symptoms will reoccur.
