There are many science projects that will call for petri dishes. These can be a bit on the expensive side so a great alternative is to make your own. Doing this can also become a fairly easy lesson as you discuss what you are doing and what purpose petri dishes serve.
What You Need:
- 4 envelopes plain gelatin
- 4 cups cold water
- 8 tsp sugar
- 4 tsp beef bouillon granules or 4 beef bouillon cubes
- Foil muffin cups
- Muffin pan
- Ziplock bags
How to Make:
- ?Mix all four envelopes of ?the gelatin with four cups of cold water, 8 teaspoons of sugar, and the bouillon granules or cubes.?Heat?until boiling while stirring constantly. Once boiling begins remove from heat and allow the gelatin to cool slightly.
- Put the muffin cups in a muffin pan and pour the gelatin?solution?into each cup until it is half full. Refrigerate the ?until the gelatin is solid.
- Remove the cups from the pan, being careful not to touch the gelatin itself. Place the cups into plastic bags and refrigerate.
- You MUST use the petri dish within 3 days!
Now you have your own petri dish so you can grow bacteria and other things. This is a great simple project that even younger kids can take art in because it is so easy.
