MANILA - Farm output increased 2 percent in the first nine months of the year on the back of higher production in the crops and poultry sub-sectors, the Department of Agriculture said on Tuesday.
On the sidelines of the 9th National Organic Agriculture Congress in Cebu, Secretary Proceso Alcala said the farm sector grew by 1.93 percent in the January to September period, producing P956 billion worth of agriculture products.
?We expect further increase in the agriculture production in the next quarter,? Alcala said, citing the expected surge in palay, corn and fisheries as a result of various government interventions.
Based on Bureau of Agricultural Statistics data, the crop sector rose 3.33 percent in the first nine months, driven by palay and corn production, which increased by 6.91 percent and 7.49 percent, respectively.
The crop subsector, which accounted for 50.73 percent of the total agriculture output, registered a gross value of P566 billion.
Palay production reached 11.5 million metric tons, or 6.91 percent higher year-on-year.
Romeo Recide, BAS director, said the agency expects full-year palay production to reach 17.967 million metric tons based on the third quarter planting intentions and standing crops.
?It will be very close to 18 million for palay,? he said.
For corn, production hit 5.9 million metric tons at end-September, or 7.49 percent higher than last year.
The livestock subsector, which contributed 15.62 percent to total farm output, recorded a 0.86 percent growth due to slower production in hog and cattle. ?Livestock production was valued at P150.9 billion, representing a 1.32 percent reduction year-on-year.
The poultry subsector grossed P121.7 billion and posted a 4.82 percent increment from last year. Chicken production was higher, translating to 3.18 percent growth in output.
The fisheries subsector, which accounted for 19.37 percent of total agricultural output, contracted 2.57 percent.
?We are still in a negative during the first nine months. But in the third quarter, we have recorded positive output in commercial fishing after a long slump,? Recide said.
He said the agency remains hopeful that the fishery subsector would reverse the two consecutive years of slump in production by yearend.
