P.T. Anderson Wouldn't Mind Making a Comedy

But hasn't he made comedies already? Yes, yes he has. But more comedic dramas, or dramedys, or dramas with comedy in them. Besides the Wachowskis, 2012 is also the year that Paul Thomas Anderson came out into the public spotlight, making many appearances and interviews supporting his new film The Master. He most recently stopped by Australia for an interview with Moviehole (via The Film Stage) and his final question connected to his wife, actress Maya Rudolph (MacGruber, Bridesmaids, "SNL"). "Any chance we'll see a PTA comedy in the near future?" The answer is not only yes, it's a very enthusiastic yes. "You mean like full blown comedy? Soon hopefully. I have to write it. It sounds daunting." I'm down! I want to see it!

So, while it's not something that is actively in the works just yet, it sounds like it might be something PTA will be pursuing (potentially after he makes Inherent Vice next). Any other hint at what we can expect from a full-blown PTA comedy? There's a bit more from the filmmaker, with a filmography that already includes Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood. He tells Moviehole in the interview:

"I'd like to make a film like Airplane. That never gets old. Or Ted. It was a big hit. Why? Because it's great. Movies that are that big a hit are never f*cking bad. I mean, there?s no such... You know, people aren't that stupid, that movie's a hit because it's hilarious. I hope [Seth MacFarlane] makes another film."

I wouldn't expect someone like Paul Thomas Anderson to namedrop comedy classics like Airplane! or Ted, but I trust in him and trust that he knows brilliant comedy when he sees it. The Film Stage reminds us that back in September, PTA also said that Inherent Vice, his adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel next, is kind of "a Cheech and Chong movie" anyway. So he's definitely venturing further into the comedy genre no matter what, but I would love to see him have some fun after his last two darker, deeply layered films (The Master, There Will Be Blood). The good news is that thanks to the continued success of The Master, it seems like PTA won't have any trouble making any kind of movie he wants next. And between Inherent Vice and this other potential comedy, he's definitely getting back to more humor sooner than later. Sound good?
